According to tradition, in the chapel of Agia Lavra, the Metropolitan of Paleon Patras Germanos blessed the effort of a group of ambitious enslaved Greeks to make the Great Idea of Freedom a reality. It was founded in 961 AD by a fellow disciple of Saint Athanasius the Athonite. It was destroyed several times during the Greek Revolution, while the construction of the current building, designed by An. Orlandos, began in 1947 and was completed in 1950.
